DISCLAIMER: Since this movie is based on a true crime story all SPOILERS are waived!  If you are not familiar with the story of Lizzie Borden this is your only warning. BTW this also means that no synopsis is needed. 😉 Go Google if you are interested! You won’t be disappointed and may fall down the rabbit hole of true unsolved crimes!

Once upon a time in my life I wanted to be a criminal psychologist.  What did that mean? I studied tons of crime!  Especially the unsolved crimes like Jack the Ripper and Lizzie Borden.  I even earned an associates in Criminal Justice and took criminology classes while working on my Bachelors.  Imagine my delight when Lizzie Borden Took an Ax popped up on my Netflix suggested list one night!  Especially since it has been a while since a movie on this particular crime has been done! This was not the only exciting aspect of this feature, it also has some of my favorite actresses!  Christina Ricci and Clea DuVall. Not to mention the other talented people in this movie; Gregg Henry and Stephen McHattie.  This combo meant I MUST watch!

I wasn’t disappointed by this movie at all!  It is very well written and acted, though I may be biased. I was hoping for more of a horror type of movie but as a TV drama it was great.  The gore, though minimal, was very well done!  You don’t see the full scale of the gore until later in the movie, but the teasers are done well! Nothing was left to the imagination over the duration of the film.  If you are only interested in the gore aspect this movie is not for you. As a drama this movie moves through the discovery of the bodies, investigation, and trial.  I found the character development to be very interesting throughout the duration of the movie.

My only complaint was the ending.  The movie was just over. It felt to sudden to me.  I don’t have any suggestions to the ending, but there could have been more at this point besides word creating the conclusion of each character. This is the only reason I did not rate this movie at the full 5 possible stars.

As a costumer, vintage fashion lover, and Steampunk fan, I LOVE the clothing in this movie!   The detail, the variety, the character that is expressed with each costume! And as an FYI, these costumes were so amazing that this movie was actually nominated for an Online Film & Television Association award!  This means I am not the only one who loved the effort that went into the costumes.

Would this be a good drinking movie? Nope, not at all.
