Hero Behind the Mask: Cosplay Medic

The point of causeplay is to give back to the community. This week I wanted to share with you an individual who gives back to cosplayers! The cosplay medic is there for your costume emergencies!

Name: Wayne D.

Location: Toronto, On, Canada

What got you into CAUSEplaying? I just like to help people in general and seeing that there is a need for someone to fix costumes at conventions, I know that I should be that person.

What keeps you CAUSEplaying? I like the challenges of the job, and it just feels good to help others.

What was your first CAUSEplay event? AnimeNorth 2014

What is your favorite costume to wear while CAUSEplaying, and Why? My Nathan Fillion mask. Because I’m obsessed with Nathan Fillion.

Most memorable CAUSEplay moment : Anytime I see the smiles of relief on people’s face after helping them fixing their cosplays.

What inspired you to focus on repairing costumes? I think it’s a right thing to do as cosplayers need the service all the time. Someone should to do it, so I figure I should take the responsibility.

You mentioned in a post once that you are also a medic for people. Have you ever had to use those skills at a con? Yes, I tended to some cuts and wounds at cons before.

Any advice for people on how they can avoid needing you amazing skills? Well, be careful with your surrounding and be mindful to protect your cosplay.

What is the most unusual thing you have had to repair? Oh haha to be honest I don’t know, because there were so many odd props I helped to fix!

Tell us about your costume! I only have the shield as my primary “prop”, aside from that I wear casual clothing. I do carry a repair kit with me, however.

How much money do you spend each con for costume first did supplied? Ah well I don’t know for sure, I think I spent around 200 bucks for the repair kits, and I restock things whenever they’re low. I would guess from 20-40 dollars each con to re-supply used stock.

If people wanted to donate or help out with these costs do you accept
This is tough. I know I should, because I’m a broke student and don’t have time for a job as my program is too busy. But I can’t take donation. I feel kinda bad if I do.

How many cons have you been the cosplay medic at? Wow, I think more than a dozen by now? I lost count of cons I have been too haha.

Tell us something random about yourself: I’m obsessed with Nathan Fillion.
