Victor Frankenstein (2015)

mv5boda5mdc2ndi5of5bml5banbnxkftztgwndyzmta2nje-_v1_sy1000_cr006761000_al_Victor Frankenstein (2015)

Genre: Drama, Horror, Inspired by books, Sci-Fi, Thriller, 31 days of horror

Rated: PG-13

Duration: 110 minutes

Personally I have been wanting a Frankenstein movie like this for several years!  It also has several actors that I love seeing preform. You probably do as well if you recognize the faces from the movie poster but in case not those actors are Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy. You won’t be disappointment with them or any of the other actors in this great movie.

You may notice below that I rated this 4 out of 5 and that is for one big reason……this is not a horror movie! It is a drama through and through. Yes there is a killer monkey, Frankenstein, and exposed organs but these alone shouldn’t get this movie labeled as a horror. The gore is extremely tame since this movie is PG-13. Had they gone further with the gore to earn an R rating I wouldn’t argue about this label. The focus on this movie is about the creators of Frankenstein and their journey to building Frankenstein, who, spoiler, is only in the last 10 or 15 minutes of this movie. And I say this is a drama because each characters has their own trauma and personal issues to overcome throughout this brilliantly written tale.

mv5byzq4ytuxmmqtztzimy00mdg2ltgyzgetody2zdezm2u3zwzjxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvyntuzmdi3nzc-_v1_I did love the creature design of Frankenstein. Lots of little details that really brought made his creation believable. I loved it so much you get an extra picture this blog so you can see for yourself the great design!

And you may not be surprised by this statement but I LOVED the costumes! The Victorian fashion was great in this move! As were the details in the sets! And the technology that was used in this movie was amazing and how I see technology (or the lack of technology) in that time period!  It really felt like another place and time!  I may or may not have steampunk inspuirarion for nurture costumes form this movie.

The Forest (2016)

mv5bmjawmzqzntc5ov5bml5banbnxkftztgwndgymtu2nze-_v1_sy1000_cr006751000_al_The Forest (2016)

Genre: Horror, Mystery, Thriller, 31 days of horror

Rated: PG-13

Duration: 93 minutes

This movie can be summed up in one word/sound….eh. It was not amazing and it was not terrible. There were tense moments but I wouldn’t describe this movie as scary. I don’t think that is reached its full potential but there were interesting things that occurred.

I kept saying to myself, and so did the friend that watched this movie with me, clearly this woman doesn’t watch horror movies. If the locals say don’t leave the path, then don’t leave the path. If the locals say don’t spend the night you might not want to spend the night. If a local says fine be stupid and spend the night but I will be back to get you at noon than maybe you should stay were they left you so that person, a local who knows the forests, can find you instead of wondering off in to the forest that locals avoid. And if you know all of this about a forest why in your right mind would you blindly run through the forest! Seriously, such stupidity. But I guess this is what is needed for many horror movies to take place. Many stupid decisions after another stupid decision.

I do appreciate that the writers did not put in 20-30 minutes of character history and build up. It was well written with the backstory being told through the character development. The legend and myths around this historical place could have been used much better in my opinion. Since there is legend of suicides taking place in this forest the variety and potential of grisly angry spirits is there but sadly not even tapped in this movie. There were also a lot of nightmare scenes that I feel could have been better. The jump scare tactics were weak and disappointing. The potential scare for those scenes, and many throughout the movie, were far from reached.

I hope down the line there is another attempt at a movie focusing on this place. There is a lot of potential for a great horror story.

This movie is soooooooooo well done. I am almost speechless watching this movie. Easily one of my favorite new movies that I have watched this year.

The characters are well developed, can’t say I am surprised since this is based on a book. The plot is well written keeping a great level of tension as a radio station gets a breaking story about a mob and strange behavior from their small community. There were many unique features and content in this movie that made it interesting and attention grasping.

This horror mystery keeps your attention as the characters recall bits and pieces of what happened to them. And figure out why they are the only ones left in their little town. One of the major horror elements of this movie it that there is a giant storm surrounding, and overtaking, their town trapping them alone.

I really liked the effects of the black clouds surrounding the town.

Over all I enjoyed the story. The charactes. The acting. I can’t go into too much detail without potentially ruining this movie. Overall though it has a great balance of suspense and wonder.

American Horror Story: Roanoke Episode 7

American Horror Story: Roanoke Episode 7

Genre: Drama, Horror, Thriller, TV

Rated: TV MA

The opening scene is this episode was glorious! I love when people who should die in horror movies do die! Just deserts type of feeling.

Kathy Bates had an incredible performance in this episode! I loved her before American Horror Story and I love her even more now after this season.

This entire episode is from the perspective of various cameras (house cameras, phones, body cameras, ext.). I don’t think that the rest of the series will move away from this filming tactic. I keep hoping that they will but they don’t! The only other reason I didn’t rate this episode lower is how much the plot was driven in this episode. And the great level of gore and death we get this time.

There are a lot of great moments and a lot of WTFF moments in this episode and it is not for the faint of heart! Even up to the end.

This is movie is pretty much filmed from the perspective of smart glasses so the cinematography is jumpy in a lost documentary sort of way.

I found this movie to be boring. The plot was slow. The characters not very interesting. Parts of this movie felt like you were walking through a haunted house. Not very interesting. And extremely predictable!

I think that this idea of a gate to zombie hell had potential if the story telling had been done in a different way. Especially focusing on the city of Jerusalem. This could have made a better action horror movie than what it was. Tons of arguing and fighting, done with great acting I will add, but to bouncy and too much camera movement for my preference. Then again, lost footage type movies are my least favorite horror types of movies and I usually rate these very low.

The only thing I particularly enjoyed about this movie was the zombie hell creature’s designs. This is brilliant and creepy awesome as you can see in the movie poster!  This is literally the only think I enjoyed about this movie!

First, the vampire make up in this movie is not very good. Like it is pretty terrible. At first I thought they were supposed to be zombies which didn’t make sense with the title. And made little sense within about 5 minutes of the movie so I re-read the synopsis to discover these were supposed vampires in a post apocalyptic type setting you typically see in zombie movies. I am dubbing this movie the hybrid zombie vampire flick. Especially since the vampires are dull witted like zombies but they can move faster than you usually see in movies.

I will say for an apocalyptic type movie this has some great characters and moments. When you think that there would be little compassion in the world the main character has a ton of compassion taking in orphaned children and saving a nun when all he has to do is fend for himself. Not all of the characters really get flushed out in depth but you do start to feel for some as people fight for their lives or to start over while against odds of zombie/vampires and the bad seeds of the human race. The main characters’ growth in the movie was well written while the supporting characters lacked but it was still a really good movie.

This movie has great use of weapons! Plus there is a zombie/vampire Santa Claus. And the ingenious use of dropping zombie/vampires into towns. I think this qualifies as the ultimate bio-warfare.
