Wonder Woman

I originally I wanted to do a very detailed armor version of Wonder Woman, the Injustice version to be exact, but decided for my first sintra armor attempt that it was a little too much for my current skill level and starting smaller would be better. I chose the classic look to get some practice and develop new skills to eventually do the Injustice armor. So many details!!! Practice makes perfect and starting small is not a bad thing! Many of the amazing armor you see in cosplay is done by people who have done this hobby for years.

Wonder Woman has her own set of problems. Originally I tried making her armor out of foam and failed utterly! I didn’t reinforce the foam correctly so the thinner foam (which was a bad idea to begin with) I used tore apart. I have since been very successful and have completed a fantasy armor set! I decided to use sintra for this Wonder Woman armor and would still make this decision because of its differences with EVA foam! This is my first sintra project and I had a ton of help from friends on how to do this. If you are unfamiliar with sintra this is a heat mold-able plastic and I loved working with it. I want to thank my husband for helping shape the armor to my body. I couldn’t have completed this project with your assistance! Or with guidance from him, Seth, and Vintage Harley Kisses. If you aren’t sure what sintra is check out this great video by RENNAgade Cosplay.

I did a lot of wet sanding to get the armor so smooth and amazing! The only part that I ended up not doing was the gauntlets. I had two failed attempts and since I had a deadline for the toy drive my amazing husband did them for me.

The corset I used as the base is one that I have had for years and hadn’t worn in a while. It is mauve but I like the color against the gold and blue. Since it had plastic boning and I was worried about it supporting the weight of armor I re-boned it with flexible metal ones. Reattaching the bottom was a nightmare! It doesn’t look the best but I decided since it was going to be hidden by a piece of armor my sixth attempt was good enough. Call me crazy but even after this I want to try and construct a corset from beginning to end. The armor is attached to the corset by Velcro. When not wearing I have to wrap this in a towel so the Velcro doesn’t damage the corset. Just a tidbit you may want to consider for your own costumes.

The only thing I feel needs to be upgraded are the boots. I had bought some great red leather boots and was so excited to find them on clearance! I don’t like the ones you normally find on line because they tend to be vinyl and that would look good with what i was envisioning. So I found white automotive leather paint and tried painting the white strip up the middle. Sadly this pulled the red dye out of the boot turning pinkish. I applied layer after layer and it never hide the pink.

I had to Finally say well this is the best this gets! When I pulled of the masking tape I discovered that it hadn’t stayed sealed over the weeks I painted the layers of white so there were streaks and blotches. I found red automotive leather paint in red but the shade is off so that won’t work to cover up the unwanted white. Luckily I bought two pairs of red boots since I was also planning on Supergirl at the time. So I wear those with this costume for now.

I have also used pieces from this costume to make a Steampunk version in 2016.

Car Cosplay: Spawn Mustang and Jeep

Usually I interview cosplayers who use their hobby for charity work or cosplayers at conventions for Cosplayers Amoung Us Magazaine, but this interview is a little bit different. This interview is with Carlos Molina of Projekt Cars. What have I learned? The guys and gals into cars can be just as geeky and excited about their fandom as cosplayers are! And that some hobbies are just as intense and fulfilling as cosplay can be! Projekt Cars, along with other car enthusiasts and cosplay prop makers, have taken on the challenge of converting two cars in to Spawn themed vehicles for Amazaing Comic Con in Las Vegas  June 23rd – 25th. Make sure to follow the progress on the Facebook Todd Mcfarlane’s Spawn Vehicles as they near the convention and finish up this labor intensive project!

It has been great to get to know Carlos through this interview. He is a very humble and enthusiastic gentleman. He also recognizes the efforts of others in this project saying, “the ENTIRE project could not have happened without the trust, help, and guidance from Guy Caldwell of Garage FX”. –Mala

Spawn Jeep red copyWhat inspired you to make the Spawn Car?
I have been a fan since IMAGE launched…..I just started opening comic boxes that have been sealed since 1995 I first starting collecting Spawn when I was in college. It was my distraction from Engineering classes (I have a Masters in Project Management and Engineering now). The dark side of the comic, appealed to the occult nature of my Scorpio sign. Fast forward 25 years, and I met Guy Caldren from Garage FX, who liked my concept of a Deadpool GT350, we built for SEMA 2015. We talked for weeks, and devised a plan to create the Spawn Mustang, it took us a year to get approval from the McFarlane group

Is there are particular cosplayer(s) you follow? Or that inspired the idea of car cosplay?
I do not follow any cosplayers, Yet…..but, I have been to many Comic Cons, because my affinity with the comic characters, I collect statues more than anything. Over the years, I have seen cosplayers transform into these spectacular costumes, much like what we do with cars. When we did a show in Houston, Matsasuri, I believe, they combined it with a car show. The vibrant colors of the cars matched the unbelievable costumes of the cosplayers who attended. Made for some cool pics. So I toyed with the idea last year, and created a GT350 with Deadpool and Wolverine. I unfortunately, did not get permission from Rob Liefield, and therefore made steps in ensuring Todd McFarlane approved every step of these builds.

Besides creating something awesome is there an ultimate goal behind the project?
I wish to blend the two industries, automotive and comic; because I believe we are all creating something different, and artists within our own genre. Comic artists can be identified easily, I truly feel each cosplayer is artistic in their costume design, and we as car builders must be creative from the initial rendering of a project, all the way until completion (which can take years)

Spawn Mustang_edited-1How much planning goes into a project like this?
The Jeep and the Mustang are what we consider “theme builds”, which we normally do for the largest automotive expo in the world, SEMA. SEMA is the Specialty Equipment Manufactures Association expo held in Las Vegas each year. It is our Super Bowl, over 100K people go through the doors each day, in this week long expo.
A build starts with a rendering, JAN-FEB timeframe. It normally gets approval between FEB-APR. After approval, that a company has selected the vehicle, all products are acquired, and the build process starts…..the build sometimes continues all the way until hours before SEMA, held on the first week in November.
The Mustang was on track. Initially, we were going to showcase a CRX, to bring a mix of New vs classic styling, American Muscle vs Import Performance. The CRX was totaled on the last week of April. So I decided to buy a Jeep, the first week in May, and test my ability. In essence, crunching a 9 month process in 8 weeks

How much of the original jeep will be modified or replaced for this project? Or is this mainly exterior work?
EVERYTHING will be modified. Exterior, Interior, Performance, Suspension, Audio/Video….I will add a complete modification list.
So far, bumpers, fenders, doors, hood, exhaust, intake have been removed/replaced

Will you be incorporating the amazing cape Spawn has in some way? Personally that’s my favorite part of the character design.
For the Jeep, Yes, the top mesh and Exo skeleton will be red. The Mustang has a marvelous image of spawn and his cape

Spawn Jeep Tshirt_back FINAL__edited-1When did you start planning the project? Actual work on the project?
The Mustang has been an ongoing project since we started the discussions, the Jeep, since I bought it, May 5th. Both are on-going, not much time left

At the point of this interview how far into the project are you. There is only about a month left until the convention.
Mustang: all the performance, carbon fiber, interior, suspension is done. Still needs wrap, guns, wheels powder coated and minimal interior work…..at about 85%
JEEP: whew….gotta lotta work ahead, will have sleepless nights….follow the process on our page, Todd McFarlane’s Spawn Vehicles

Is there a point in a project you get nervous you might not hit your deadline? Or do you work well under pressure?
I work very well underpressure. I have been a Production Manager for DaimlerChrysler in a Union Enviornment, and an Army Officer in a deployed combat unit, 173rd ABN BDE

Since you are a car guy and not a cosplayer, you might not be aware that a majority of the cosplay community work on their costumes up until con, while traveling to con, and even sometimes up until the convention’s competition start. Seriously, some even have to pack their sewing machines. Do you have pointers or recommendations for people to avoid this? Planning tips? Ext.
I can relate….SEMA is our big showcase. I have had wheels shipped to Las Vegas the day before roll-in, and at another time, a pallet of brakes arrive a day before we leave to SEMA….I can tell you stories. This is why we start planning, the day SEMA ends.

It seems there are other creative people involved in this project. Who are they and what have they done?
Guy Caldwell: Facebook Garage FX
Guy Driver: Facebook Old Craftey Creations
Projekt Cars: Facebook ProjektCars | http://www.projektcars.com/

What about cosplay caught your attention/inspired this project?

The creative nature of those who make these amazing costumes, and knowing each costume could be matched with a certain vehcile….almost like, if Rogue:Xmen, had a car, what would it be?

Spawn S550 Tshirt_back FINALWhy did you choose Spawn? And what is your favorite version of the character?
Spawn was my escape in college, I still have 1-60 in triplicate, I like many aspects of the character. My favorite version is the original

What elements of Spawn are being pulled into the car? Is it not character design or story focused?
Mustang: The exterior wrap was developed by the Todd McFarlane group using past comic images. The weapons are just our rendition on what a “Spawn” car would have, if he needed to drive
JEEP: The concept is Violator Hunter. It will have an image of issue #4 on the hood. The theme is black and red with some lime green, Spawn’s necromancer power. I plan to have LOTS of guns and missiles on this all-terrain beast, with chains going around body of the Jeep

What has been your favorite part of this project so far?
The whole idea that Todd McFarlane is involved, and gave his blessing…..it also allowed me to meet some great individuals like Guy Dwyer (Old Crafty Creations), and create a bigger bond with Guy Caldwell (Garage FX)

Do you have advice for others interested in a project like this?
I have YouTube videos full of advice when building major project vehicles

If people want to follow the progress on this or future projects where can the find you?
Projekt Cars:  Facebook | http://www.projektcars.com/

Geek Girl 2016 Star Wars Meet Up

The words Comic Con and conventions have become a common word in the nerd and geek communities especially with the rise of geek and pop culture. Big cities and small towns a like now have their own Comic Cons and the Mecca of all Comic Cons in San Diego is even harder to get passes for. Conventions of every sort from steampunk to TV shows like Super Natural are rising in their own popularity and each convention has so much to offer! Panels, celebrity signatures and photos, meet ups, dances, vendors, artists, costume contest, fashion shows, and gaming rooms. Some even offer concerts or special events depending on their emphasis. There is so much to see and do that you may feel overwhelmed depending on the size of the con. Needless to say there are reasons why most cons span three to four days! If you have never been to a convention you might not know where to begin. If you are wondering this is the blog for you!

What to do pre-con? First thing to know and realize is that unless you are attending a small con you may not be able to do everything you would like. I recommend deciding your top, most important, and exciting things you want to do. And a few back up options as well. I start with looking at panels. If my favorite celebrities have anything special scheduled. I also check planned meet ups because it’s always fun to meet people passionate about the same things you are. As a cosplayer I also look through social media for any cosplay photo meet ups as these are usually not arranged by the convention and are genre, or fandom, themed so people are in similar costumes. Some events, like dating events and costume contest, require preregistration so keep this in mind and be aware of the deadlines for these events. These extra events may also have additional fees to participate. For example, some steampunk convention have a fee for tea parties or tea duels because of the added cost of food and drink.

 photo IMG_1799_zps9q7wglff.jpg

I met so many other Wonder Woman fans it was amazing! So much love and fandom! Emerald City Comic Con 2016

If you are terrible with time management and remembering things some cons now have phone apps that allow you to select the scheduled events and set a reminder. Usually these are available closer to the convention date. What ever you decide to do remember that rooms can only hold so many people at once so there are caps on the number of attendees. Make sure to plan enough time to get the location of the event and be prepared to set in line.

Now that you know what you want to do plan you budget! Or even do this before you know what you would like to do. Allocate money for food and how much you have to spend with vendors or artists.

I also recommend finding a friend(s) to go with! You may already have a friend or two into this sort of thing or the type of con want to go to. Cons can be a lot of fun, I have gone solo and in groups, but I have found having friends to share the experience with makes it better.

When it gets closer to con time about a week before I start an immune boosting regimen. I also take take this during and for a week after con. For me this is increasing my water intake and taking a vitamin c supplement every day, twice a day! There are over the counter items you can take to boost your immunity or you can adjust your diet for healthier nutritious foods. Do your research and find what options work best for your own health and lifestyle.

If you bought new shoes for your adventure (causal con goer or cosplayer) make sure to break these in before con.

You have waited for months or maybe close to a year for the convention and the time has come for your adventure!  The most important thing you can do, no matter how many days you are going to a con, is self care! For me this is important as a cosplayer and casual con goer. If you aren’t feeling well then you won’t enjoy yourself! After all that is why you are going right?! To have an adventure!

What do I mean by self care? I will break it down.

  1. Hydrate. Carry a water bottle on you or make sure you have budget enough to purchase this at the venue. Purchasing can get expensive just to warn you. Getting dehydrated at conventions is no fun! You increase your chances of getting con crud and it just makes it harder to enjoy yourself.
  2. Bring snacks. Personally, I like to bring protein bars, gogurt (which can be frozen and help keep other items you might pack cold), those amazing pouches of applesauce, and string cheese. These are small so they are easy to carry in back pack or purse. I personally recommend higher protein options and healthy snacks. But I also have friends who pack higher carbohydrate foods because that is what works for them.
  3. Allow yourself to take a break. Sit down for few minutes throughout the day. Leave the convention hall if you find the amount of stimulation too much.
  4. Make sure to schedule time to eat meals! Even if it may be in your hotel room. Put a reminder in you phone if you don’t think you will remember this.
  5. Personal hygiene! Take a shower every day. This is for your own physical and mental health and for the courtesy of others. This is another component of not getting con crud.
  6. Also, make sure you go to the bathroom when you have the opportunity, especially
in costume. Because you may be arrested by a bunch of Star Wars Mandos and locked in a cage when you already delayed taking care of this vital function. Believe it or not this literally happened to me.

You think I am joking but I am not. I really had to pee! I spent like 30 minutes helping a lost girl and when it finally was okay to go about my business I get a text. Stay where you are. Next thing I know all of the Mandalorian Mercs at the con surround me. March me through the con and lock me in the cage. Where my sweet husband purposed to me. And the whole time I had to really pee!  I told him if he ever purposed he had to make it memorable and he totally came through! Salt Lake Comic Con 2013

  7. If you have medications you take daily do not forget to take these! Put a reminder in you phone if needed! I have a medical condition myself and I pack extra everything even if I am at the con for one day! If you would like to read more about that I have a blog focusing on this topic.
 photo IMG_2719_zpsngsxu8lx.jpg

Geek Girl Science Activity Center 2016

I always bring a back pack (usually it is smaller so it doesn’t distract from my cosplay). I recommend you do the same. Here are my recommendations of what to put in it.

  1. Make sure to have cash on you for food in case a vendor or restaurant run into issues with the credit card machines. Or in case you have a transportation issue and need to pay for a service home or to your hotel. Since this emergency based money I keep it away from my spending money.
  2. Have a small first aid kit. Conventions do have first aid areas but it never hurts to have this on hand.
  3. I know some cosplayers and con goers who even being deodorant with them.
  4. I pack a portable phone charger too. I have friends who pack multiple chargers. Mainly because we like to play PokémonGo and it really drains batteries at convention. But also so if we need to contact a friend we have the means to.

Other tips for cons.

  1. I have been at several conventions that there are so many people cell phone towers can’t process the amount of calls so phones do not work at all. I recommend having a meeting time and location with your con adventuring buddies to check in on each other. Especially if there are children involved. I have helped a child I didn’t know get through a crowd for 60,000 people to the information desk to locate her family because they were separated in the crowd and their cell phone didn’t work. It was an extremely unpleasant experience for the kid.
  2. If I have never been to a convention location before I like to get a layout of the place on the first day. Things I figure out: Where can I find food inside the convention?
     photo IMG_2620 - Copy_zps8ujpj5ds.jpg

    Steamposium 2016

Bathrooms? Panel areas? A quiet space in case I need a break? Alcohol ? If the con has a TakeThis’ AKF room where is it located? If you have anxiety issues this can be your best friend!

  3. Be aware of the cons harassment policy. Especially in cosplay. Many cons have very strict rules around this. If you do not feels safe or you are being harassed speak with a security guard or con staff.
  4. Be nice to the con staff. 90% of the time these are volunteers who are giving up their con experience so you can have one. And some of them have given up months of their lives to make this happen.
  5. Sometimes you can haggle with dealers on the last day. Many would rather sell their wares then haul it back home. But if you really want something and there are only a few of the item. Don’t wait. Once it’s gone it is gone and chances are rare items won’t be there the last day.

If it’s your first time cosplaying here are a few pointers!

  1. If you have high heels or uncomfortable shows bring an extra more comfortable set. If I have to walk from my hotel to the con I have slip on shoes or flip flops for this. These are small enough that they fit nicely into my little back pack. My feet particularly appreciate this after walking the con floor in heels!
  2. Check the dress code and weapon policies so that you don’t get asked to change/leave or have the weapon you worked hard on making taken away. Each con has different rules so make sure you look into these.
  3. If you need a break it is okay to deny pictures. Just be polite about it. Remember you are a patron too!
  4. Bring an emergency costume repair kit. Some conventions have cosplay first aid stations now but they may not have what you need.
  5. Remember to get pictures of your costume! Either on your phone or schedule a photo shot with a photographer. If a photographer gets your picture at the con don’t be afraid to ask for a business card. Many photographers do this for a hobby and would be happy to let you download the file. If you want to have guaranteed files defiantly schedule with a photographer.
  6. If you have something time sensitive I recommend not going in costume. It’s so much easier to get through the crowd without a costume.

The second most important thing about any convention is to have FUN!!!!!!

If you are interested in checking out Amazing Con Las Vegas but aren’t sure about travel to this convention make sure to check out their about them page for hours, location, panels, and programming or  these travel deals. Many conventions also have these type of information on their websites.

Raven (Teen Titans Cartoon)

 photo _MG_9054-Edit_zpshuzsvpf4.jpg

Raven was one of my favorite characters in high school. Do not get me started on Teen Titans Go! The characters and story of the originally series was sooo amazing it makes me sad that the characters have been changed so drastically to their current atrocity that they are. At the same time, the creators can poke fun of themselves so I did slightly forgive them for this video. But only because of this video.

Now, back my thoughts on this costume. I ordered the leggings and leotard because somethings are cheaper to buy than make! It took a lot of searching to find a long sleeved turtle neck leotard so I hope I never have to replace this costume! If you are currently looking I hope that the cosplay world has changed enough that it will be easier for you! The shoes were very difficult to find! Maybe I am too picky because that seems to be a common issue with each and every cannon costume I do! One reason I do love t photo _MG_9115-Edit_zpsgoe0aspi.jpghis costume is that the shoes are extremely comfortable!

The pattern for the cloak was not hard to modify. Sewing the point was frustrating, not going to lie, but I think I have gained enough skill that if I made this hood now it would be much easier.

Raven was one of my first attempts at accessories. Branching away from fabrics. I made the gems out of a foam clay covered in mod podge and glitter. TONS of glitter!!! I will never use this material again for costuming! This costume is high maintenance to store. The mod podge sticks to everything, usually ripping the box when I try to wear it, so I have to store it wrapped in fabric. Or if something is left on top of the gems it leaves an impression that you cannot get out. Since then I have learned to work with Resin and have commissioned several Raven belts and gems with this method. I just need to get around to making my own. One of these days. Sadly, I don’t wear this costume as much as I use to so I may not ever up grade my belt. n fact, I am photo _MG_9094-Edit_zpskednxqr1.jpgcurrently debating about retiring this costume all together. However, every one gets mad when I bring the idea up. LOL

You can’t see it these pictures but I do have a gem for the forehead. I didn’t make this lovely addition though. Since I was just learning resin casting I commissioned this from the talented and sweet Lumi! Before having this accessory I used red dipstick liner to draw the shape on my forehead. If you are wondering about how to put something like this on your own body I use the same glue you would use for false eyelashes.

This is the only costume I have entered into a costume contest. I learned that comic book characters are not good matches for events like this. I had a few other friends learn this the hard way too. So that is a heads up! Stick to video game, anime, and movie costumes. Comic book costumes tend to by too simple.I had a ton of fun though and am still friends with many of the talent cosplayers I competed against.

Funny thing about Raven s I love to photobomb in this costume. It is completely against Raven’s personality but it is sooooooo much fun. I don’t do this in any other costumes oddly enough. Photobombing strangers anyways. I will always photobomb a friend.

Of course if you are interested in commissioning a Raven belt and gems of your own please e-mail me at adventureswithmala@gmail.com or message me on Facebook.  Please note, as I do not have a mold, and do not recast the work of someone else, the head gem is not included in commissions at this time.

Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love (2012)

Why Do Ghouls Fall in Love (2012)

Genre: Animation, Family, Monster High

Rated: TV-Y7

Duration: 46 minutes

This feature focuses on Draculaura‘s sweet 1600 birthday, which so happens to be Valentine’s Day. In this world Valentine’s Day was created just for Draculaura by an ex-boyfriend Kieran ValentineClawd, Draculaura’s current boyfriend, is stressing about what to get his girlfriend for her sweet 1600 birthday.  Toralei doesn’t get invited to the birthday party because of all the mean things she has done in the past so in spite she pretends to be Draculaura and calls up the ex, Valentine, convincing him to transfer to Monster High. And the most drama filled Monster High plot thickens as these two team up. Valentine is a dark soul up to no good when he aims to steal Draculaura’s heart, literally. While the ghouls try to save their best ghoulfriend Toralei does her best to stop them.

My favorite part of this movie is Ghoulia who can’t decide whether to take Slo Mo or Don of the Dead to Draculaura’s birthday party so she decides to do it scientifically creating a program to decide who she should take. However, the program decides that Ghoulia should date Heath Burns, who is absolutely the wrong personality for genius bookworm.

Lessons that we learn, love is a powerful emotion.

I am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House (2016)

Genre: Netflix Original, Thriller

Duration: 87 minutes

Rated: TV 14

This movie is not going to be for everyone. If you are not into artistic style movies then this one will not be for you. Though it is listed as a thriller it is slower moving than many of this genre. Personally, it kept my attention as I listened to the narrative wondering what happened to the narrator and how this evolves and connects the words that I heard in the opening monologue. You can equate this movie to living and moving poetry, but not just any poetry due to the subject matter, this movie is very much a Gothic poem about the interaction of the dead and the living. Over all this movie is very circular in the context and simplistic in the context but it does it in such a way that you aren’t sure what you are seeing and hearing at first. I actually replayed the last part of the movie a second time noticing and accepting the simplistic and elegant story telling for the art that it is.

All of the monologues in this movie are eloquently written, hence the poem aspects mentioned already, connecting with the fact that one of the few characters in this movie is an author. The delivery adding to the beauty and ideas painted within the words. There is some beautiful imagery during the opening monologue that quickly grabbed my attention wondering what this movie was truly about.

If you like artistic, avant garde types of movies you will be captivated and appreciate this movie for what it is. If you are into the standard Hollywood movies I wouldn’t waste your time on this movie.

Friday Night Frights (2013)

Friday Night Frights (2013)

Genre: Animation, Family, Monster High

Rated: TV-Y7

Duration: 46 minutes

Friday Night Frights is the sixth TV special and results in one of my favorite releases of dolls, the Skultimate Roller Maze line.

This feature focuses on the school competition of Skultimate Roller Maze (also known as SKRM) which can be related to roller derby on an obstetrical course. As a former derby girl this puts this movie in one of the highest ranking possible positions.

The ghouls (girls) step up to a new challenge when the  school’s team ends up being short a player, and then a whole team when the boys of the school refuse to play with a girl. They face a lot of resentment and harassment since girls haven’t played the game since Robecca Steam was demolished. Against all odds the girls make it to the SKRM championship. If you want to know if they win you need to watch this great tv special.

Ghouls Rule (2012)

mv5bodmyotuwmjq1nv5bml5banbnxkftztgwotexntaxmze-_v1_Ghouls Rule (2012)

Genre: Animation, Family, Monster High

Ever wonder how other cultures, especially monster cultures, view Halloween? Well, you get to learn the Monster High prescriptive in this movie. And the students are terrified of what they call normies, those in this world who are not monsters, because they believe that the normies hunt monsters each Halloween with pitch forks and torches. You know old school monster movie style. This is Frankie’s first Halloween but the magazines she reads show a very different way of celebrating based on candy and fun, not the horror and cautionary tale that the teachers warn about. She discovers information in the school showing that monsters and normies use to celebrate Halloween together dressing in the finest outfits and costumes, eating candy, and dancing the night away. But no one believes her or wants to accept that maybe they should talk to the normies. Especially after the normies pull a Halloween prank on the school. In retaliation the monster decide to do the same and vandalize the normie school which leads them on an adventure to actually get to know some of the normies.

This movie talks about prejudices against others showing that underneath our skin we are all the same and want similar things out of life. Sometimes we forget this and need a reminder just like the people of New Salem and the monsters of Monster High.

What do we learn in this movie? Things are not always as they seem, maybe you should put yourself in the other person’s shoes before judging, you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Maybe I am noticing this since I watched this movie close to watching Why do Ghouls fall in Love?, but it seems that there is an emphasis on dating that isn’t needed. In this movie Draculaura pressures Clawdeen to date.

American Horror Story: Roanoke Season 6 (2016) Episode 2

Genre: Drama, Horror, Thriller, TV

Rated: TV MA

This episode is finally getting away from the lost footage things that I strongly dislike! With how many people died in the past few episodes I was wondering how AHS would handle the rest of the season since this only episode 10.

The last 10-15 minutes of this episode were wonderful! Very powerful and brilliant! I could have cared less for the rest of the episode to be honest.

This part redeemed the season and I will finish it because of this. Like I said last review this one would determine if I finished the season or not.

I gave it a day after watching this episode before writing anything down. I loved this season to begin to with but each episode is less appealing to me than the last. I am getting to the point that I don’t know if I even want to finish this season……this is a first for American Horror Story. I have devoured the last seasons as if  I had been in the desert for days and finally found fresh cool water. But now I just don’t care. We will see how next week goes, maybe I will use that a a determination of finishing the season or not. Chances are will finish it to be honest but I am just not feeling it anymore.

This episode did go for some great shock and succeeded in that aspect, which is the only good thing I have to say about it.

American Horror Story: Roanoke Season 6 (2016) Episode 8

Episode eight had to be my least favorite episode. All it felt like was one long episode of torture porn with little plot progression. I can handle torture porn idea if it has to do with the plot but this didn’t feel like it did. This would be the second episode that felt very much like a filler and not a plot driven episode. This is defiantly one of the more dramatic season not focusing on a good or detailed plot. All the other season felt like they had very well developed characters with rich histories but after the last few episodes this season does not feel this way.

The only good thing about this episode is how the darker nature of characters started to emerge with everything that the characters have experienced. And they have had some traumatic experiences on screen.

There was also a point that I jumped so I upped the episode rating for actually getting me to jump. Something that is not easily accomplished.

Victor Frankenstein (2015)

mv5boda5mdc2ndi5of5bml5banbnxkftztgwndyzmta2nje-_v1_sy1000_cr006761000_al_Victor Frankenstein (2015)

Genre: Drama, Horror, Inspired by books, Sci-Fi, Thriller, 31 days of horror

Rated: PG-13

Duration: 110 minutes

Personally I have been wanting a Frankenstein movie like this for several years!  It also has several actors that I love seeing preform. You probably do as well if you recognize the faces from the movie poster but in case not those actors are Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy. You won’t be disappointment with them or any of the other actors in this great movie.

You may notice below that I rated this 4 out of 5 and that is for one big reason……this is not a horror movie! It is a drama through and through. Yes there is a killer monkey, Frankenstein, and exposed organs but these alone shouldn’t get this movie labeled as a horror. The gore is extremely tame since this movie is PG-13. Had they gone further with the gore to earn an R rating I wouldn’t argue about this label. The focus on this movie is about the creators of Frankenstein and their journey to building Frankenstein, who, spoiler, is only in the last 10 or 15 minutes of this movie. And I say this is a drama because each characters has their own trauma and personal issues to overcome throughout this brilliantly written tale.

mv5byzq4ytuxmmqtztzimy00mdg2ltgyzgetody2zdezm2u3zwzjxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvyntuzmdi3nzc-_v1_I did love the creature design of Frankenstein. Lots of little details that really brought made his creation believable. I loved it so much you get an extra picture this blog so you can see for yourself the great design!

And you may not be surprised by this statement but I LOVED the costumes! The Victorian fashion was great in this move! As were the details in the sets! And the technology that was used in this movie was amazing and how I see technology (or the lack of technology) in that time period!  It really felt like another place and time!  I may or may not have steampunk inspuirarion for nurture costumes form this movie.

Genre: Horror, Mystery, Thriller, 31 days of horror

Rated: PG-13

Duration: 93 minutes

This movie can be summed up in one word/sound….eh. It was not amazing and it was not terrible. There were tense moments but I wouldn’t describe this movie as scary. I don’t think that is reached its full potential but there were interesting things that occurred.

I kept saying to myself, and so did the friend that watched this movie with me, clearly this woman doesn’t watch horror movies. If the locals say don’t leave the path, then don’t leave the path. If the locals say don’t spend the night you might not want to spend the night. If a local says fine be stupid and spend the night but I will be back to get you at noon than maybe you should stay were they left you so that person, a local who knows the forests, can find you instead of wondering off in to the forest that locals avoid. And if you know all of this about a forest why in your right mind would you blindly run through the forest! Seriously, such stupidity. But I guess this is what is needed for many horror movies to take place. Many stupid decisions after another stupid decision.

I do appreciate that the writers did not put in 20-30 minutes of character history and build up. It was well written with the backstory being told through the character development. The legend and myths around this historical place could have been used much better in my opinion. Since there is legend of suicides taking place in this forest the variety and potential of grisly angry spirits is there but sadly not even tapped in this movie. There were also a lot of nightmare scenes that I feel could have been better. The jump scare tactics were weak and disappointing. The potential scare for those scenes, and many throughout the movie, were far from reached.

I hope down the line there is another attempt at a movie focusing on this place. There is a lot of potential for a great horror story.

This movie is soooooooooo well done. I am almost speechless watching this movie. Easily one of my favorite new movies that I have watched this year.

The characters are well developed, can’t say I am surprised since this is based on a book. The plot is well written keeping a great level of tension as a radio station gets a breaking story about a mob and strange behavior from their small community. There were many unique features and content in this movie that made it interesting and attention grasping.

This horror mystery keeps your attention as the characters recall bits and pieces of what happened to them. And figure out why they are the only ones left in their little town. One of the major horror elements of this movie it that there is a giant storm surrounding, and overtaking, their town trapping them alone.

I really liked the effects of the black clouds surrounding the town.

Over all I enjoyed the story. The charactes. The acting. I can’t go into too much detail without potentially ruining this movie. Overall though it has a great balance of suspense and wonder.

American Horror Story: Roanoke Episode 7

American Horror Story: Roanoke Episode 7

The opening scene is this episode was glorious! I love when people who should die in horror movies do die! Just deserts type of feeling.

Kathy Bates had an incredible performance in this episode! I loved her before American Horror Story and I love her even more now after this season.

This entire episode is from the perspective of various cameras (house cameras, phones, body cameras, ext.). I don’t think that the rest of the series will move away from this filming tactic. I keep hoping that they will but they don’t! The only other reason I didn’t rate this episode lower is how much the plot was driven in this episode. And the great level of gore and death we get this time.

There are a lot of great moments and a lot of WTFF moments in this episode and it is not for the faint of heart! Even up to the end.

This is movie is pretty much filmed from the perspective of smart glasses so the cinematography is jumpy in a lost documentary sort of way.

I found this movie to be boring. The plot was slow. The characters not very interesting. Parts of this movie felt like you were walking through a haunted house. Not very interesting. And extremely predictable!

I think that this idea of a gate to zombie hell had potential if the story telling had been done in a different way. Especially focusing on the city of Jerusalem. This could have made a better action horror movie than what it was. Tons of arguing and fighting, done with great acting I will add, but to bouncy and too much camera movement for my preference. Then again, lost footage type movies are my least favorite horror types of movies and I usually rate these very low.

The only thing I particularly enjoyed about this movie was the zombie hell creature’s designs. This is brilliant and creepy awesome as you can see in the movie poster!  This is literally the only think I enjoyed about this movie!

First, the vampire make up in this movie is not very good. Like it is pretty terrible. At first I thought they were supposed to be zombies which didn’t make sense with the title. And made little sense within about 5 minutes of the movie so I re-read the synopsis to discover these were supposed vampires in a post apocalyptic type setting you typically see in zombie movies. I am dubbing this movie the hybrid zombie vampire flick. Especially since the vampires are dull witted like zombies but they can move faster than you usually see in movies.

I will say for an apocalyptic type movie this has some great characters and moments. When you think that there would be little compassion in the world the main character has a ton of compassion taking in orphaned children and saving a nun when all he has to do is fend for himself. Not all of the characters really get flushed out in depth but you do start to feel for some as people fight for their lives or to start over while against odds of zombie/vampires and the bad seeds of the human race. The main characters’ growth in the movie was well written while the supporting characters lacked but it was still a really good movie.

This movie has great use of weapons! Plus there is a zombie/vampire Santa Claus. And the ingenious use of dropping zombie/vampires into towns. I think this qualifies as the ultimate bio-warfare.

Great visuals for the opening credit sequence.

Great story telling in this movie!! Very well written grabbing your attention from the get go. The characters keep you engaged as their personalities and complexities are revealed. The actors do extremely well in this movie. I was not disappointed with a single actor in this movie.  You might recognize Liam Cunningham from HBO’s Game of Thrones and he has such a great performance in this movie.

If you like gory horror movies this one has some decent gore. It isn’t done in a cheesy way and I don’t feel it was over the top like movies like Saw franchise became or Hostel.

The music choices were spot on adding so much to this movie the way a soundtrack is supposed to. I particularly enjoyed the end credit song.

Fright Night (2013)

mv5bmjmymtc5ntqzov5bml5banbnxkftztgwmzk2mjgwmde-_v1_Fright Night (2013)

Genre: B-Rate, Horror, Thriller, 31 days of horror 2016

Rated: R

Duration: 100 minutes

After watching the atrocious vampire movie Cowboys & Vampires I decided it was worth watching a real vampire movie. Especially since I am nearing 31 reviews and haven’t watched a decent one yet. Vampires are one of my favorite horror creatures, despite their increase in romantic literature as of late, so I tend to watch these types of movies all year. This particular movie is a sequel to the remake of Fright Night done in 2011, another movie well worth watching! This is not a remake of the sequel from 1988 to the original but its own story.

It looks like this movie went straight to DVD and there are many reasons for this. There were a lot of cheesy effects, and some plot decisions, that I think were bad decisions. This movie is full of cliches from the beginning. Girl on girl make out session. Hot teacher fantasy (not a spoiler since its in the description) who just to happens to be a vampire. Strip club. Virgin blood being important.

Gore was decent with this movie. Not a spoiler since this is a vampire movie but there is a ton of blood. And I mean bathtubs and swimming pools full of blood as this is what keeps out sexy vampire teacher super sexy after all.

I liked the location selected for this movie. I mean, Romania screams vampire lore. And it was nice to see a modern day Romania setting over the old village with torches and pitchfork type of feel. In Dracula’s palace there were some really neat statutes that fit perfectly into the concept of this movie. Set design a majority of this movie was on point.

Not so sure about the use of echolocation used by vampires in this movie. It was an interesting idea but not 100% sure about the execution of this. Defiantly haven’t seen that used before in any of the vampire movies I have watched. This segments of the movie using this had a ton of strobe lights which just didn’t come across right to me. At least I am assuming they were strobe lights but it could have just been editing. Either way I don’t think that it helped the scene.  My biggest complaint may be a complete spoiler but I won’t say where is happens to avoid spoiling anything in case you watch this movie is, why would the echolocation of one vampire hurt the ears of vampire? Wouldn’t that technically hurt their own ears? It doesn’t hurt other bats does it? I just don’t understand. If anyone does please let me know.

I will say that the fight scene in the bathroom at about 1 hour 8 minutes, minus the close up of the poop in the toilet, was pretty awesome. Full of cheesy one-liners! This scene almost redeemed the movie. And right after that we find ourselves back in the strip club where the owner is “fortifying” his business with pages from the bible, garlic, and holy water. Another scene that almost redeemed the movie.

I think that the acting was good in this movie but never cared for the characters. The end fight scene seemed to drag on for too long. It never seemed to end. Seriously never SEEMED TO END!

This movie did have a ton of great one liners.
