Genre: Drama, Horror, Inspired by books, Sci-Fi, Thriller, 31 days of horror

Rated: PG-13

Duration: 110 minutes

Personally I have been wanting a Frankenstein movie like this for several years!  It also has several actors that I love seeing preform. You probably do as well if you recognize the faces from the movie poster but in case not those actors are Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy. You won’t be disappointment with them or any of the other actors in this great movie.

You may notice below that I rated this 4 out of 5 and that is for one big reason……this is not a horror movie! It is a drama through and through. Yes there is a killer monkey, Frankenstein, and exposed organs but these alone shouldn’t get this movie labeled as a horror. The gore is extremely tame since this movie is PG-13. Had they gone further with the gore to earn an R rating I wouldn’t argue about this label. The focus on this movie is about the creators of Frankenstein and their journey to building Frankenstein, who, spoiler, is only in the last 10 or 15 minutes of this movie. And I say this is a drama because each characters has their own trauma and personal issues to overcome throughout this brilliantly written tale.

mv5byzq4ytuxmmqtztzimy00mdg2ltgyzgetody2zdezm2u3zwzjxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvyntuzmdi3nzc-_v1_I did love the creature design of Frankenstein. Lots of little details that really brought made his creation believable. I loved it so much you get an extra picture this blog so you can see for yourself the great design!

And you may not be surprised by this statement but I LOVED the costumes! The Victorian fashion was great in this move! As were the details in the sets! And the technology that was used in this movie was amazing and how I see technology (or the lack of technology) in that time period!  It really felt like another place and time!  I may or may not have steampunk inspuirarion for nurture costumes form this movie.

This movie can be summed up in one word/sound….eh. It was not amazing and it was not terrible. There were tense moments but I wouldn’t describe this movie as scary. I don’t think that is reached its full potential but there were interesting things that occurred.

I kept saying to myself, and so did the friend that watched this movie with me, clearly this woman doesn’t watch horror movies. If the locals say don’t leave the path, then don’t leave the path. If the locals say don’t spend the night you might not want to spend the night. If a local says fine be stupid and spend the night but I will be back to get you at noon than maybe you should stay were they left you so that person, a local who knows the forests, can find you instead of wondering off in to the forest that locals avoid. And if you know all of this about a forest why in your right mind would you blindly run through the forest! Seriously, such stupidity. But I guess this is what is needed for many horror movies to take place. Many stupid decisions after another stupid decision.

I do appreciate that the writers did not put in 20-30 minutes of character history and build up. It was well written with the backstory being told through the character development. The legend and myths around this historical place could have been used much better in my opinion. Since there is legend of suicides taking place in this forest the variety and potential of grisly angry spirits is there but sadly not even tapped in this movie. There were also a lot of nightmare scenes that I feel could have been better. The jump scare tactics were weak and disappointing. The potential scare for those scenes, and many throughout the movie, were far from reached.

I hope down the line there is another attempt at a movie focusing on this place. There is a lot of potential for a great horror story.

This movie is soooooooooo well done. I am almost speechless watching this movie. Easily one of my favorite new movies that I have watched this year.

The characters are well developed, can’t say I am surprised since this is based on a book. The plot is well written keeping a great level of tension as a radio station gets a breaking story about a mob and strange behavior from their small community. There were many unique features and content in this movie that made it interesting and attention grasping.

This horror mystery keeps your attention as the characters recall bits and pieces of what happened to them. And figure out why they are the only ones left in their little town. One of the major horror elements of this movie it that there is a giant storm surrounding, and overtaking, their town trapping them alone.

I really liked the effects of the black clouds surrounding the town.

Over all I enjoyed the story. The charactes. The acting. I can’t go into too much detail without potentially ruining this movie. Overall though it has a great balance of suspense and wonder.

This is movie is pretty much filmed from the perspective of smart glasses so the cinematography is jumpy in a lost documentary sort of way.

I found this movie to be boring. The plot was slow. The characters not very interesting. Parts of this movie felt like you were walking through a haunted house. Not very interesting. And extremely predictable!

I think that this idea of a gate to zombie hell had potential if the story telling had been done in a different way. Especially focusing on the city of Jerusalem. This could have made a better action horror movie than what it was. Tons of arguing and fighting, done with great acting I will add, but to bouncy and too much camera movement for my preference. Then again, lost footage type movies are my least favorite horror types of movies and I usually rate these very low.

The only thing I particularly enjoyed about this movie was the zombie hell creature’s designs. This is brilliant and creepy awesome as you can see in the movie poster!  This is literally the only think I enjoyed about this movie!

First, the vampire make up in this movie is not very good. Like it is pretty terrible. At first I thought they were supposed to be zombies which didn’t make sense with the title. And made little sense within about 5 minutes of the movie so I re-read the synopsis to discover these were supposed vampires in a post apocalyptic type setting you typically see in zombie movies. I am dubbing this movie the hybrid zombie vampire flick. Especially since the vampires are dull witted like zombies but they can move faster than you usually see in movies.

I will say for an apocalyptic type movie this has some great characters and moments. When you think that there would be little compassion in the world the main character has a ton of compassion taking in orphaned children and saving a nun when all he has to do is fend for himself. Not all of the characters really get flushed out in depth but you do start to feel for some as people fight for their lives or to start over while against odds of zombie/vampires and the bad seeds of the human race. The main characters’ growth in the movie was well written while the supporting characters lacked but it was still a really good movie.

This movie has great use of weapons! Plus there is a zombie/vampire Santa Claus. And the ingenious use of dropping zombie/vampires into towns. I think this qualifies as the ultimate bio-warfare.

Great visuals for the opening credit sequence.

Great story telling in this movie!! Very well written grabbing your attention from the get go. The characters keep you engaged as their personalities and complexities are revealed. The actors do extremely well in this movie. I was not disappointed with a single actor in this movie.  You might recognize Liam Cunningham from HBO’s Game of Thrones and he has such a great performance in this movie.

If you like gory horror movies this one has some decent gore. It isn’t done in a cheesy way and I don’t feel it was over the top like movies like Saw franchise became or Hostel.

The music choices were spot on adding so much to this movie the way a soundtrack is supposed to. I particularly enjoyed the end credit song.

After watching the atrocious vampire movie Cowboys & Vampires I decided it was worth watching a real vampire movie. Especially since I am nearing 31 reviews and haven’t watched a decent one yet. Vampires are one of my favorite horror creatures, despite their increase in romantic literature as of late, so I tend to watch these types of movies all year. This particular movie is a sequel to the remake of Fright Night done in 2011, another movie well worth watching! This is not a remake of the sequel from 1988 to the original but its own story.

It looks like this movie went straight to DVD and there are many reasons for this. There were a lot of cheesy effects, and some plot decisions, that I think were bad decisions. This movie is full of cliches from the beginning. Girl on girl make out session. Hot teacher fantasy (not a spoiler since its in the description) who just to happens to be a vampire. Strip club. Virgin blood being important.

Gore was decent with this movie. Not a spoiler since this is a vampire movie but there is a ton of blood. And I mean bathtubs and swimming pools full of blood as this is what keeps out sexy vampire teacher super sexy after all.

I liked the location selected for this movie. I mean, Romania screams vampire lore. And it was nice to see a modern day Romania setting over the old village with torches and pitchfork type of feel. In Dracula’s palace there were some really neat statutes that fit perfectly into the concept of this movie. Set design a majority of this movie was on point.

Not so sure about the use of echolocation used by vampires in this movie. It was an interesting idea but not 100% sure about the execution of this. Defiantly haven’t seen that used before in any of the vampire movies I have watched. This segments of the movie using this had a ton of strobe lights which just didn’t come across right to me. At least I am assuming they were strobe lights but it could have just been editing. Either way I don’t think that it helped the scene.  My biggest complaint may be a complete spoiler but I won’t say where is happens to avoid spoiling anything in case you watch this movie is, why would the echolocation of one vampire hurt the ears of vampire? Wouldn’t that technically hurt their own ears? It doesn’t hurt other bats does it? I just don’t understand. If anyone does please let me know.

I will say that the fight scene in the bathroom at about 1 hour 8 minutes, minus the close up of the poop in the toilet, was pretty awesome. Full of cheesy one-liners! This scene almost redeemed the movie. And right after that we find ourselves back in the strip club where the owner is “fortifying” his business with pages from the bible, garlic, and holy water. Another scene that almost redeemed the movie.

I think that the acting was good in this movie but never cared for the characters. The end fight scene seemed to drag on for too long. It never seemed to end. Seriously never SEEMED TO END!

This movie did have a ton of great one liners.

Cowboys & Vampires (2010)

p8502972_p_v7_aaCowboys & Vampires (2010) (Original Title: Dead West)

Genre: Action, B-Rate, Horror, Western, 31 Days of Horror 2016

Rated: TV 14

Duration: 94 minutes

I started this movie based strictly off the title and the amazing movie poster Amazon has associated with film. I mean look at how cool that design is! When I selected this movie I was looking for a movie to get Kenny the Creeper to review since his review of Zombeavers was so great! I love talking to him about B-Rate movies that are so atrocious they are awesome. Sadly, this wasn’t one of those gems in the horror genre.

mv5bmti4mze4mdk4of5bml5banbnxkftztcwmzuymtq1mw-_v1_This movie was not at all what I was expecting especially considering it seemed to have a pretty high production budget. I was really hoping Cowboys & Aliens (highly recommend that movie btw) type movie but nope, not even close. I think if this movie stayed with it’s original title that this would have been less deceiving, which by the way is Dead West. (You can see it over that way on your screen > > > >. Unless you are on a mobile device that it might be that way ^^^^^^.) The Dead West image is not deceiving like the Cowboys & Vampires image. I guess this is an example that good marketing can go a long way.

I guess I should say what this movie is about now. This is a movie about western movies and not a western movie. Should have read the description before viewing. Not only this but the scenes are cut up by an interview about a movie….or events…..so confused. Interesting idea but I think it was too much, especially with the cuts to Western movies and something about a Western movie set with tourists. Not really sure I followed the whole premise of this movie. Was the movie itself about this Western tourist attraction or was the interview about a movie about the tourist attraction within this movie? PPPPSSSSSSST…..The answer to this question became clearer as the movie progressed but it didn’t make the movie any better.

Despite the efforts to make you feel for the characters I just didn’t care about them. The acting wasn’t too bad for a b-rate but it wasn’t that good either. The leading lady Angélica Celaya did a great job with the transformation of her character through this movie. I wouldn’t mind seeing her in another vampire role.

Half way through the movie I was tempted to turn it off……but I sat through it. And I mean painfully sat through it. The gore and special effects, what minuscule amount there was, didn’t even make up for the atrocity that is this move.

At one point there is basically a haunted house/cave built on the movie attraction place, or whatever it is, and we spend a good chunk of time following random people through the haunted cave while they die in various means by various creatures, who are not even vampires.  This was ridiculous and unnecessary for the plot. Seriously, I don’t even understand why people thought this was good idea. There are only a few vampires in the entire movie. This should be titled Cowboy Wannabes vs the Supernatural instead of deceiving us.

If you chose to watch this movie I hope you enjoy it more than I did. Now excuse me while I go look for a movie like what I originally wanted to see. Maybe I will just watch Cowboys & Aliens instead of risking another disappointment. Actually, Penny Dreadful Season 3 is on Netflix now I think I will watch this amazing series.

This movie is not your typical horror movie. There is no sex, gore, or scary occult creature. Well, technically there is a “creature” but you never see who, or what, put the 50 characters in the same room together. The true scariness of this movie is the confrontation with human nature you experience. This movie is intellectual and thought provoking as the view is forced to confront a lot of current issues in the United Stated as the character are forced to vote for the next to die. Issues like racism, sexism, ageism, immigration, and  social standing just to name a few. If you are not willing to take a hard look at the reality of society then this movie is not for you.

Overall the story is simple and there is no build up like in most horror movies. As a viewer you are thrown right into the confusion and fear the characters are experiencing. Which I think added to the tension as we discovered the reality of the situation with the characters.

Personally I loved the simplicity of the set. The design was fantastic and added a lot to the story I feel.

Some of the characters, especially the ones the died at the beginning, were superficial but those that survived longer became deeper as we learned about their prejudices while each person is confronted with the possibility of their death. Some fought for other’s survival while others fought for their own survival creating a lot of tension.

I couldn’t help but wonder what would I do if I were put in this position. What is the moral thing to do? Is there an ethical decision when it comes to choosing your life or someone else’s? And if you decided that someone else’s life is more important, how do you decide whose life to save? A pregnant woman? A child? Someone who provides for 6 kids? A single mother of a toddler? What would you do if you were placed in this terrifying situation?

I watched this show as a kid and remember having nightmares about it, maybe that was Sphere since Queen Latifa isn’t in this one……..Maybe it was both of them. Either way lets see if it is scary still or just triggering the overactive imagination of a 7 year old. Maybe I was 8 or 9 when I saw this movie. Can’t remember but I was 7 the year it was released so we will go with that. Yes, I have liked horror movies for a very long time! My mother and I used to watch them together.

The opening starts with “2015 first permanent colony established on the moon”. The high hopes of science fiction already disappointed as it is 2016 and nothing like that exist now. In fact, most space exploration has been stopped or stalled due to the extremely high cost and little pay off. I love old movies that high hopes for the future of space exploration.

This movie doesn’t waste its time getting to the creep factor! The effects are obviously old but I think that they have held up pretty well over the years for what they are. I mean this film is nearly 20 years old after all.

The sets are incredible in this movie. A lot of time and effort went into them it is clear.

This is another well casted movie with Laurence FishburneSam Neill, and Joely Richardson among them. These are the names you will recognize but all of the cast did a phenomenal job. Some of the British accents seemed off but this is a minor issue in the grand scheme of this movie.

This movie, as an adult, is for sure not nightmare inducing but it was intense and great fun to watch. Even 20 years later. If you like science fiction and/or horror this movie is perfect for you!

Sorry, but here is another  movie that I absolutely loved in theaters and decided to watch again.  And yet another award winning horror movie! Cause you know, Joss Whedon was involved in this movie! I finally got my hands on a copy of this movie as well which means I had to watch it. I really should have gotten this movie when it first came out! Since I am into horror movies I have a lot of friends that like horror movies as well. and this is one movie cited as a great movie by many!

Since this a horror movie that made it to the theaters this is another movie with a great cast! Some people you might know are Chris HemsworthBradley WhitfordRichard Jenkins, and Amy Acker.

There is some great comedy with this movie! Well written in so many different ways! There is some fantastic character development. I also love the odes to other horror movies you get in this movie. So much detail and amazing-ness about!

This movie actually made me jump, which is not an easy thing to accomplish! The gore is fantastic in this movie, that alone earns this movie 5 stars!

There is so much to love about this movie. The costumes, the sets, the cast, the story. I just don’t know where to begin. With today’s advances in technology I rarely buy a hard copy of any movie but this is one that I actually purchased and plan to watch regularly.

The cast is utterly amazing! Starring Mia WasikowskaJessica ChastainTom HiddlestonJim Beaver, and Burn Gorman just to name a few in this star studded cast. The acting is amazing for te most part. There are a few scenes that could have been better, particularily by Jim Beaves whose years on Supernatural as Bobby may have influenced his performance in this movie, but the performance by others made up for this in my opinion.

Another reason to love this movie is the talent of Guillermo del Toro. This man has true artistic vision. The visuals in this movie are one reason I wanted to make sure to see this in theaters. The colors, the contrast of Victorian fashion with the decay of the architecture of the time, the elements of the horror designs, the creature designs. Absolutely wonderful!

Some people complained about the effects but I was very happy with them.

I wasn’t sure about this movie at first. It is slower paced, which isn’t usually a problem for me, but the only reason I kept watching is how many awards it won. I think that this movie had an interesting story and possibility but I just didn’t feel it. To some this movie may have a lot of tension but I struggled to stay engaged. Maybe it was an off night for a movie like this one that came up as a recommendation as a physiological thriller. Sadly, since I watched it all the way through I will probably not watch this one again. If you want to check this movie out, by all means do! I just recommended to be in the frame of mind for a psychological thriller and something that is very different from your standard story telling.

For this years 31 days of horror Netflix has really made a lot of award winning recommendations. And this movie is yet another. I do have to say that so far the selection and recommendations have been soooo much better than last year making reviewing all of these easier than last year. And I have been able to keep my promise to do better reviewing movies for you better than last year! GO ME!

Now to this movie. It is was extremely creepy in a good way. Family traditions that date back 100’s of years are not always a good, especially if you have to force it on the next generation.  The religious implications behind the cannibalism in this movie added to level of creepy. The acting was excellent. Gore was very realistic. Simply put everything about this movie was fantastic! It has easily made it to one of my top 10 horror movies of all times.

As the movie poster above quotes, “Does for cannibals what Let the Right One In did for vampires.” As a side note, if you haven’t seen Let the Right One In you should! Let the Right One In is on my top list as well.

Not gonna lie, my 10 year high school reunion would have been more entertaining had it been more like this movie! I love the premises of this and it starts off with great character introductions. I would have been safe since I didn’t have a superlative in the year book and that was how their deaths were designed in the slasher type movie, not this was a made for TV movie so the gore and horror content is rather mild.

One thing I loved about this movie is that we get a death in the first 10 minutes of the movie. You don’t see what was done to this person until later just as an FYI.

The acting is eehh throughout the movie. The dialogue was actually pretty well done for a TV movie. The characters were great to be honest. The writers took time to set up the character connection but I don’t feel that it was too much time, as with other movies, or not enough as most horror movies have done. Other reviews seemed to be bothered by this but I think it was a nice change of pace.

I wish I could say my favorite line of this movie but it totally gives away who the killer is. So I will refrain from doing that.

Rated: R

Duration: 89 minutes

What happens to one’s life after possession? What about your job? How judgmental can the world and your family be? What about friends? Especially if you wronged them while possessed. The main character, Ava, gets to confront just these issues, and criminal charges for events that occurred while possessed, while she tried to rebuild her life and figure out what happened during her possession. To make matters even more difficult the demon is trying to gain control of her again. As a way to get the criminal charges clear she ends up going to a group called spiritual possessed anonymous. Where she meets another previously possessed woman who actually wants to get her demon back. Hell already broke free in Ava’s world but things get even crazier.

The story was great with an interesting progression of the plot as we discover with the main character what happened to her while she was possessed.

I found this movie to be hilarious but it is a dry and dark humor, meaning it is not for everyone. This is my type of comedy!

Duration: 80 minutes

This is an award winning foreign film. On Netflix the audio is in German or Russian but you can have English subtitles. This movie is in essences Silent Hill meets the Cell.

This movie is slower paced but intriguing. Well worth sitting through until the end. It defiantly goes against a lot of typical horror “cliches”. In fact, I almost don’t want to leave that listed in the genre list above. There is some blood and gore but very little and it is not a major facet of the story telling. If that is what you are in the mood for I recommend something else to watch but if you want thought provoking, this is your film!

Some of the effects you could tell were with a green screen but overall I think it was well done. The creature effects were pretty cool in the few scenes that they were used. Acting was decent for the most part. The music was well done in this movie. I really enjoyed the end credit music.

The cinematography of this movie was amazing! Very nice use of color and contrasts. And the scenery used was beautiful. Though some of the usage didn’t further the plot in my opinion.

Loved the costumes in this. I am not sure if it was stylized or to depict a certain time period, which I did attempt to research but couldn’t find much on this movie in English, either way I very much enjoyed these.

I found this another review of this movie well worth checking out to make your decision if you want to watch this movie or not. Check it out here.

Holidays (2016)

Genre: Horror, 31 Days of Horror 2016

Rated: Not rated

Duration: 105 minutes

This film is compilation of short films focusing on holidays. Each with its own horror twist.

Some of these were really good while others were just bizarre. If you ever wondered what candy, fluffy chicks, and bunnies have to do with the story of Jesus’ resurrection the Easter short story has a creative, yet bizarre, answer for you.

I highly recommend the Valentine’s,  Mother’s Day,  Father’s Day, and Christmas story. My favorite one had to be the New Year’s short film though, this was the most graphic and gore-ific short of the series. If you are slasher or gore fan this one is for you. The gore in the other shorts was is pretty mild over all with the majority of the gore being implied.

Overall each short film was well written and filmed. You also get the pleasure of some big names such as Seth Green, Kevin Smith, and Harley Queen Smith.

Creep (2014)

mv5bmty0ntu2odm5ml5bml5banbnxkftztgwmtawota5nte-_v1_Creep (2014)

Genre: Horror, Thriller, 31 Days of Horror 2016

Rated: R

Duration: 77 minutes

To begin with, this is done by the same producer of Sinister (which I recommend) and Paranormal Activities (a movie that I do not personally like. I am prepared for hate to come my way for this but those movies are terrible. Boring, ridiculous, and I don’t understand how it has been made into sequels!) Based off of previous experience this movie could go one of two ways and it instantly feels like it is going the Paranormal Activity route with two characters filming as a sort of diary because one of them has a terminal brain tumor and wants to document what he is like for his unborn child to see later. This could be a spoiler, but at the same time is a big plot progression point, there is no cancer and this is a ploy to torment and mess with the other character.

This movie is super boring during the first chunk as the main character constantly being a dick-weed and trying to scare the other guy when he least expects it. About 30 minutes into the movie deep dark secrets come out and you hope that it gets better. But it doesn’t as the dick-weed hides the other character’s car keys to get him to stay when he doesn’t want to anymore.

Overall, there are only three characters in this movie. They do a great acting job and the writing does make the dark character pretty creepy. I wouldn’t watch this movie again and not so sure I recommend it with how slow it is. To be honest I didn’t watch the last 20 minutes ’cause I just wasn’t feeling this movie at all.
