Duration: 100 minutes

After watching the atrocious vampire movie Cowboys & Vampires I decided it was worth watching a real vampire movie. Especially since I am nearing 31 reviews and haven’t watched a decent one yet. Vampires are one of my favorite horror creatures, despite their increase in romantic literature as of late, so I tend to watch these types of movies all year. This particular movie is a sequel to the remake of Fright Night done in 2011, another movie well worth watching! This is not a remake of the sequel from 1988 to the original but its own story.

It looks like this movie went straight to DVD and there are many reasons for this. There were a lot of cheesy effects, and some plot decisions, that I think were bad decisions. This movie is full of cliches from the beginning. Girl on girl make out session. Hot teacher fantasy (not a spoiler since its in the description) who just to happens to be a vampire. Strip club. Virgin blood being important.

Gore was decent with this movie. Not a spoiler since this is a vampire movie but there is a ton of blood. And I mean bathtubs and swimming pools full of blood as this is what keeps out sexy vampire teacher super sexy after all.

I liked the location selected for this movie. I mean, Romania screams vampire lore. And it was nice to see a modern day Romania setting over the old village with torches and pitchfork type of feel. In Dracula’s palace there were some really neat statutes that fit perfectly into the concept of this movie. Set design a majority of this movie was on point.

Not so sure about the use of echolocation used by vampires in this movie. It was an interesting idea but not 100% sure about the execution of this. Defiantly haven’t seen that used before in any of the vampire movies I have watched. This segments of the movie using this had a ton of strobe lights which just didn’t come across right to me. At least I am assuming they were strobe lights but it could have just been editing. Either way I don’t think that it helped the scene.  My biggest complaint may be a complete spoiler but I won’t say where is happens to avoid spoiling anything in case you watch this movie is, why would the echolocation of one vampire hurt the ears of vampire? Wouldn’t that technically hurt their own ears? It doesn’t hurt other bats does it? I just don’t understand. If anyone does please let me know.

I will say that the fight scene in the bathroom at about 1 hour 8 minutes, minus the close up of the poop in the toilet, was pretty awesome. Full of cheesy one-liners! This scene almost redeemed the movie. And right after that we find ourselves back in the strip club where the owner is “fortifying” his business with pages from the bible, garlic, and holy water. Another scene that almost redeemed the movie.

I think that the acting was good in this movie but never cared for the characters. The end fight scene seemed to drag on for too long. It never seemed to end. Seriously never SEEMED TO END!

This movie did have a ton of great one liners.

Cowboys & Vampires (2010)

p8502972_p_v7_aaCowboys & Vampires (2010) (Original Title: Dead West)

Genre: Action, B-Rate, Horror, Western, 31 Days of Horror 2016

Rated: TV 14

Duration: 94 minutes

I started this movie based strictly off the title and the amazing movie poster Amazon has associated with film. I mean look at how cool that design is! When I selected this movie I was looking for a movie to get Kenny the Creeper to review since his review of Zombeavers was so great! I love talking to him about B-Rate movies that are so atrocious they are awesome. Sadly, this wasn’t one of those gems in the horror genre.

mv5bmti4mze4mdk4of5bml5banbnxkftztcwmzuymtq1mw-_v1_This movie was not at all what I was expecting especially considering it seemed to have a pretty high production budget. I was really hoping Cowboys & Aliens (highly recommend that movie btw) type movie but nope, not even close. I think if this movie stayed with it’s original title that this would have been less deceiving, which by the way is Dead West. (You can see it over that way on your screen > > > >. Unless you are on a mobile device that it might be that way ^^^^^^.) The Dead West image is not deceiving like the Cowboys & Vampires image. I guess this is an example that good marketing can go a long way.

I guess I should say what this movie is about now. This is a movie about western movies and not a western movie. Should have read the description before viewing. Not only this but the scenes are cut up by an interview about a movie….or events… confused. Interesting idea but I think it was too much, especially with the cuts to Western movies and something about a Western movie set with tourists. Not really sure I followed the whole premise of this movie. Was the movie itself about this Western tourist attraction or was the interview about a movie about the tourist attraction within this movie? PPPPSSSSSSST…..The answer to this question became clearer as the movie progressed but it didn’t make the movie any better.

Despite the efforts to make you feel for the characters I just didn’t care about them. The acting wasn’t too bad for a b-rate but it wasn’t that good either. The leading lady Angélica Celaya did a great job with the transformation of her character through this movie. I wouldn’t mind seeing her in another vampire role.

Half way through the movie I was tempted to turn it off……but I sat through it. And I mean painfully sat through it. The gore and special effects, what minuscule amount there was, didn’t even make up for the atrocity that is this move.

At one point there is basically a haunted house/cave built on the movie attraction place, or whatever it is, and we spend a good chunk of time following random people through the haunted cave while they die in various means by various creatures, who are not even vampires.  This was ridiculous and unnecessary for the plot. Seriously, I don’t even understand why people thought this was good idea. There are only a few vampires in the entire movie. This should be titled Cowboy Wannabes vs the Supernatural instead of deceiving us.

If you chose to watch this movie I hope you enjoy it more than I did. Now excuse me while I go look for a movie like what I originally wanted to see. Maybe I will just watch Cowboys & Aliens instead of risking another disappointment. Actually, Penny Dreadful Season 3 is on Netflix now I think I will watch this amazing series.

This movie is not your typical horror movie. There is no sex, gore, or scary occult creature. Well, technically there is a “creature” but you never see who, or what, put the 50 characters in the same room together. The true scariness of this movie is the confrontation with human nature you experience. This movie is intellectual and thought provoking as the view is forced to confront a lot of current issues in the United Stated as the character are forced to vote for the next to die. Issues like racism, sexism, ageism, immigration, and  social standing just to name a few. If you are not willing to take a hard look at the reality of society then this movie is not for you.

Overall the story is simple and there is no build up like in most horror movies. As a viewer you are thrown right into the confusion and fear the characters are experiencing. Which I think added to the tension as we discovered the reality of the situation with the characters.

Personally I loved the simplicity of the set. The design was fantastic and added a lot to the story I feel.

Some of the characters, especially the ones the died at the beginning, were superficial but those that survived longer became deeper as we learned about their prejudices while each person is confronted with the possibility of their death. Some fought for other’s survival while others fought for their own survival creating a lot of tension.

I couldn’t help but wonder what would I do if I were put in this position. What is the moral thing to do? Is there an ethical decision when it comes to choosing your life or someone else’s? And if you decided that someone else’s life is more important, how do you decide whose life to save? A pregnant woman? A child? Someone who provides for 6 kids? A single mother of a toddler? What would you do if you were placed in this terrifying situation?

I watched this show as a kid and remember having nightmares about it, maybe that was Sphere since Queen Latifa isn’t in this one……..Maybe it was both of them. Either way lets see if it is scary still or just triggering the overactive imagination of a 7 year old. Maybe I was 8 or 9 when I saw this movie. Can’t remember but I was 7 the year it was released so we will go with that. Yes, I have liked horror movies for a very long time! My mother and I used to watch them together.

The opening starts with “2015 first permanent colony established on the moon”. The high hopes of science fiction already disappointed as it is 2016 and nothing like that exist now. In fact, most space exploration has been stopped or stalled due to the extremely high cost and little pay off. I love old movies that high hopes for the future of space exploration.

This movie doesn’t waste its time getting to the creep factor! The effects are obviously old but I think that they have held up pretty well over the years for what they are. I mean this film is nearly 20 years old after all.

The sets are incredible in this movie. A lot of time and effort went into them it is clear.

This is another well casted movie with Laurence FishburneSam Neill, and Joely Richardson among them. These are the names you will recognize but all of the cast did a phenomenal job. Some of the British accents seemed off but this is a minor issue in the grand scheme of this movie.

This movie, as an adult, is for sure not nightmare inducing but it was intense and great fun to watch. Even 20 years later. If you like science fiction and/or horror this movie is perfect for you!

Sorry, but here is another  movie that I absolutely loved in theaters and decided to watch again.  And yet another award winning horror movie! Cause you know, Joss Whedon was involved in this movie! I finally got my hands on a copy of this movie as well which means I had to watch it. I really should have gotten this movie when it first came out! Since I am into horror movies I have a lot of friends that like horror movies as well. and this is one movie cited as a great movie by many!

Since this a horror movie that made it to the theaters this is another movie with a great cast! Some people you might know are Chris HemsworthBradley WhitfordRichard Jenkins, and Amy Acker.

There is some great comedy with this movie! Well written in so many different ways! There is some fantastic character development. I also love the odes to other horror movies you get in this movie. So much detail and amazing-ness about!

This movie actually made me jump, which is not an easy thing to accomplish! The gore is fantastic in this movie, that alone earns this movie 5 stars!

There is so much to love about this movie. The costumes, the sets, the cast, the story. I just don’t know where to begin. With today’s advances in technology I rarely buy a hard copy of any movie but this is one that I actually purchased and plan to watch regularly.

The cast is utterly amazing! Starring Mia WasikowskaJessica ChastainTom HiddlestonJim Beaver, and Burn Gorman just to name a few in this star studded cast. The acting is amazing for te most part. There are a few scenes that could have been better, particularily by Jim Beaves whose years on Supernatural as Bobby may have influenced his performance in this movie, but the performance by others made up for this in my opinion.

Another reason to love this movie is the talent of Guillermo del Toro. This man has true artistic vision. The visuals in this movie are one reason I wanted to make sure to see this in theaters. The colors, the contrast of Victorian fashion with the decay of the architecture of the time, the elements of the horror designs, the creature designs. Absolutely wonderful!

Some people complained about the effects but I was very happy with them.

I wasn’t sure about this movie at first. It is slower paced, which isn’t usually a problem for me, but the only reason I kept watching is how many awards it won. I think that this movie had an interesting story and possibility but I just didn’t feel it. To some this movie may have a lot of tension but I struggled to stay engaged. Maybe it was an off night for a movie like this one that came up as a recommendation as a physiological thriller. Sadly, since I watched it all the way through I will probably not watch this one again. If you want to check this movie out, by all means do! I just recommended to be in the frame of mind for a psychological thriller and something that is very different from your standard story telling.
