Genre: Netflix Original, Thriller

Duration: 87 minutes

Rated: TV 14

This movie is not going to be for everyone. If you are not into artistic style movies then this one will not be for you. Though it is listed as a thriller it is slower moving than many of this genre. Personally, it kept my attention as I listened to the narrative wondering what happened to the narrator and how this evolves and connects the words that I heard in the opening monologue. You can equate this movie to living and moving poetry, but not just any poetry due to the subject matter, this movie is very much a Gothic poem about the interaction of the dead and the living. Over all this movie is very circular in the context and simplistic in the context but it does it in such a way that you aren’t sure what you are seeing and hearing at first. I actually replayed the last part of the movie a second time noticing and accepting the simplistic and elegant story telling for the art that it is.

All of the monologues in this movie are eloquently written, hence the poem aspects mentioned already, connecting with the fact that one of the few characters in this movie is an author. The delivery adding to the beauty and ideas painted within the words. There is some beautiful imagery during the opening monologue that quickly grabbed my attention wondering what this movie was truly about.

If you like artistic, avant garde types of movies you will be captivated and appreciate this movie for what it is. If you are into the standard Hollywood movies I wouldn’t waste your time on this movie.

American Horror Story Roanoke :E9

American Horror Story: Roanoke Season 6 (2016) Episode 9

Genre: Drama, Horror, Thriller, TV

Rated: TV MA

I gave it a day after watching this episode before writing anything down. I loved this season to begin to with but each episode is less appealing to me than the last. I am getting to the point that I don’t know if I even want to finish this season……this is a first for American Horror Story. I have devoured the last seasons as if  I had been in the desert for days and finally found fresh cool water. But now I just don’t care. We will see how next week goes, maybe I will use that a a determination of finishing the season or not. Chances are will finish it to be honest but I am just not feeling it anymore.

This episode did go for some great shock and succeeded in that aspect, which is the only good thing I have to say about it.

American Horror Story: Roanoke Season 6 (2016) Episode 8

Episode eight had to be my least favorite episode. All it felt like was one long episode of torture porn with little plot progression. I can handle torture porn idea if it has to do with the plot but this didn’t feel like it did. This would be the second episode that felt very much like a filler and not a plot driven episode. This is defiantly one of the more dramatic season not focusing on a good or detailed plot. All the other season felt like they had very well developed characters with rich histories but after the last few episodes this season does not feel this way.

The only good thing about this episode is how the darker nature of characters started to emerge with everything that the characters have experienced. And they have had some traumatic experiences on screen.

There was also a point that I jumped so I upped the episode rating for actually getting me to jump. Something that is not easily accomplished.

Victor Frankenstein (2015)

Genre: Drama, Horror, Inspired by books, Sci-Fi, Thriller, 31 days of horror

Rated: PG-13

Duration: 110 minutes

Personally I have been wanting a Frankenstein movie like this for several years!  It also has several actors that I love seeing preform. You probably do as well if you recognize the faces from the movie poster but in case not those actors are Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy. You won’t be disappointment with them or any of the other actors in this great movie.

You may notice below that I rated this 4 out of 5 and that is for one big reason……this is not a horror movie! It is a drama through and through. Yes there is a killer monkey, Frankenstein, and exposed organs but these alone shouldn’t get this movie labeled as a horror. The gore is extremely tame since this movie is PG-13. Had they gone further with the gore to earn an R rating I wouldn’t argue about this label. The focus on this movie is about the creators of Frankenstein and their journey to building Frankenstein, who, spoiler, is only in the last 10 or 15 minutes of this movie. And I say this is a drama because each characters has their own trauma and personal issues to overcome throughout this brilliantly written tale.

mv5byzq4ytuxmmqtztzimy00mdg2ltgyzgetody2zdezm2u3zwzjxkeyxkfqcgdeqxvyntuzmdi3nzc-_v1_I did love the creature design of Frankenstein. Lots of little details that really brought made his creation believable. I loved it so much you get an extra picture this blog so you can see for yourself the great design!

And you may not be surprised by this statement but I LOVED the costumes! The Victorian fashion was great in this move! As were the details in the sets! And the technology that was used in this movie was amazing and how I see technology (or the lack of technology) in that time period!  It really felt like another place and time!  I may or may not have steampunk inspuirarion for nurture costumes form this movie.

The Forest (2016)

Genre: Horror, Mystery, Thriller, 31 days of horror

Rated: PG-13

Duration: 93 minutes

This movie can be summed up in one word/sound….eh. It was not amazing and it was not terrible. There were tense moments but I wouldn’t describe this movie as scary. I don’t think that is reached its full potential but there were interesting things that occurred.

I kept saying to myself, and so did the friend that watched this movie with me, clearly this woman doesn’t watch horror movies. If the locals say don’t leave the path, then don’t leave the path. If the locals say don’t spend the night you might not want to spend the night. If a local says fine be stupid and spend the night but I will be back to get you at noon than maybe you should stay were they left you so that person, a local who knows the forests, can find you instead of wondering off in to the forest that locals avoid. And if you know all of this about a forest why in your right mind would you blindly run through the forest! Seriously, such stupidity. But I guess this is what is needed for many horror movies to take place. Many stupid decisions after another stupid decision.

I do appreciate that the writers did not put in 20-30 minutes of character history and build up. It was well written with the backstory being told through the character development. The legend and myths around this historical place could have been used much better in my opinion. Since there is legend of suicides taking place in this forest the variety and potential of grisly angry spirits is there but sadly not even tapped in this movie. There were also a lot of nightmare scenes that I feel could have been better. The jump scare tactics were weak and disappointing. The potential scare for those scenes, and many throughout the movie, were far from reached.

I hope down the line there is another attempt at a movie focusing on this place. There is a lot of potential for a great horror story.

This movie is soooooooooo well done. I am almost speechless watching this movie. Easily one of my favorite new movies that I have watched this year.

The characters are well developed, can’t say I am surprised since this is based on a book. The plot is well written keeping a great level of tension as a radio station gets a breaking story about a mob and strange behavior from their small community. There were many unique features and content in this movie that made it interesting and attention grasping.

This horror mystery keeps your attention as the characters recall bits and pieces of what happened to them. And figure out why they are the only ones left in their little town. One of the major horror elements of this movie it that there is a giant storm surrounding, and overtaking, their town trapping them alone.

I really liked the effects of the black clouds surrounding the town.

Over all I enjoyed the story. The charactes. The acting. I can’t go into too much detail without potentially ruining this movie. Overall though it has a great balance of suspense and wonder.
